The development of a writer.

It all began with a thought.

“The University of Michigan is great, but it could be better”

I couldn’t escape it. So what better time to elaborate on my thoughts than finals week last spring?

ll

These notes provided the main premise for my Repurposing project, a special edition of The Every Three Weekly, a satirical spoof of The Michigan Daily. I intertwined ideas that were already in existence with fresh ideas, all based on issues at the University of Michigan. A major parallel between my original notes and my Repurposing Project can be drawn between my thoughts on the UgLi and the Infographic about the same topic.

My RePurposing Project obviously carries many similarities to my original notes. So, how did I get to my ReMediating Project?

Beixi Li, another member of my Writing 220 cohort, and I had discussed the possibility of creating a Humans of New York -esque website for the Ann Arbor community at the beginning of the semester. We saw the ReMediating Project as the perfect possibility to expand upon our ideas. I would target my audience, the University of Michigan community, and she would pinpoint residents of the greater Ann Arbor Community. Whereas the purpose for my original project was to emphasize small problems at the University of Michigan in order to urge readers to take life less seriously, Beixi’s purpose was all about reflection. Resultantly, we came up with two questions to ask strangers:

  1. What inspires you? (via Beixi)

  2. What is something you wish you had appreciated more? (via me)

After dozens of interviews and hundreds of photos, Ann Arbor Awesome was born.

However, the process of completing a website that we would be willing to share with the community was not simple.

We attempted to use three different platforms before coming back to the initial one. Then, their were the captions. How could we translate the feelings we felt and the emotions the people we met expressed to our audience?

It went from simply writing the questions and answers underneath each photo:

To briefly elaborating on the entire situation:

While Beixi and I are happy with our ReMediation project, we hope to extend it to hundreds more photos and incorporating social media, because, well, Ann Arbor is Awesome.
